When it comes to biz size, smaller really is better

Phone Post It NoteLately I’ve been hearing radio commercials for one of those services that allows you to create an endless menu of phone choices designed to make your business look bigger than it really is. You know what I’m talking about, Press 1 for the customer service department; Press 2 to listen to obnoxious hold music, Press 3 to leave a message that no one will ever return. Report after report informs us that people get extremely annoyed by those phone menus, so I wonder why anyone would want to do that to their customers?

Well, I do understand why. So many small business owners have the misguided notion that people won’t pay any attention to them if they think they are a “small” business.

But I see being a very small business as a great advantage.

As a small business — and even better if your business is just you — you can move faster to help your clients, work more efficiently and likely cheaper, and solve problems easier than the bureaucratic entanglements and nonsense that one usually gets when dealing with a bigger company.

So celebrate your small business size. Use it to your advantage. Let your target audience know just how much better it is doing business with you than those big guys. Turn your small size into an advantage for everyone (including you).

And promise them that they’ll never get caught up in an endless loop of phone options when they call you.
