The world of Internet marketing is full of some crazy-smart people and there are a few I follow who are my favorites. But none can compete in the crazy-smart arena better than Gary Vaynerchuk. Who would have thought that a wise-cracking, smart-mouthed — foul mouthed — 30-something could turn into an internet sensation — with a daily video show about wine?

Well, Gary has endeared himself to millions through his Wine Library TV broadcast, his keynote speeches, and his best-selling business books. Marketers don’t come much more authentic than Gary, and he shares lots of valuable lessons — and the secrets of his own success — in his book, “Crush It!”

Gary says that to be successful — no matter what endeavor you’re undertaking — you must:

1. Find your passion. Find the one thing you adore above all else and go for it with all your heart. If you look just for the “money” niche, you’ll burn out and give up before you succeed. Or you’ll succeed but hate what you’re doing.

2. Be willing to hustle. Gary credits much of his success to his willingness to do whatever it took to get ahead — including hosting his show five days a week, without fail, for over a year. “Don’t just do something once” he says, “do it over and over and over again until people start to notice.” But take note: Even though Gary is quite the competitor, when he says “do whatever it takes” that does NOT include hurting other people.

3. Be who you are. Not everyone warms to Gary’s in-your-face, sometimes over-the-top style, but those who do, adore him. He recommends not even trying to please everyone, and instead do what you do best. Be who you are and those that are attracted to who you are will become your biggest fans.

4. Build the audience and the money will find you. Gary swears that he didn’t try to monetize his rabid and ever-growing audience. Instead, the offers came to him. He thinks anyone can do the same. Put something great out there and folks will naturally want to engage with you.

In sum, “Crush It!” recommends finding a niche you love (where have you heard that before?), working your rear-end off, letting folks see the real you, and working hard until your audience grows to the point where they just can’t get enough of you.

This book is a perfect read if you’re looking for inspiration to begin — or continue — your entrepreneurial journey.
